Canadian Grocers Continue To Supply Portfolio Food

by Greg Schnell

The Canadian Grocers have some of the strongest SCTR rankings in Canada right now. A quick run through the charts show us some pretty interesting stuff. Here is George Weston (WN.TO). The SCTR is soaring and the two-year consolidation appears to be well behind it. Here is Metro. (MRU.TO). Metro had a stunningly good chart in place until July 2016. After a 9-month correction, Metro looks to be on the move again.  Loblaws (L.TO) continues to work. This breakout from a 2-year consolidation is great! Empire Read More

Energy and Minerals Get Slammed

by Greg Schnell

The storm that we have been watching build has finally blown in. As the $TSX rolled down over 150 points today, the carnage is in the energy and materials sectors.  Brent and West Texas Crude have been falling, the commodities like Copper and Gold have been falling, agriculture stocks have been falling, and the summation of what was a subtle drift lower really started to accelerate today across the Commodities space. One of the cleanest charts to display this is the XEG.TO. The SCTR is clearly out of favor and until this starts to perk up, the industry group Read More

Lumber Stocks Soar On Tariff Announcement

by Greg Schnell

WIth tariffs being applied today, I thought I would take a look at the forestry stocks. I think we'll all be surprised to see them soaring with $LUMBER limit down in the Futures market today. Note the $LUMBER price will be updated after the market close. This is yesterday's close for $LUMBER and real time for the stocks. Starting with the WOOD ETF, the chart is beautiful. In the zoombox we can see todays action. Interfor (IFP.TO) looks great. West Fraser (WFT.TO) has the top percentage move in the group today..Nice! Read More

Gold Stocks Surge! Want A List Of Strong Ones?

by Greg Schnell

Gold stocks bubbled Tuesday and there were some great trend lines broken. So let's work through a collection of the Gold stocks. Here is the XGD.TO Miners ETF in Canada. The SCTR is going ballastic and is still a little below my trigger line of 75. However, this is for the gold stocks average. On the price panel, the trend line finally broke Tuesday and the MACD is moving above zero. The Relative Strength in purple is still weak. We would like to see this move to three month highs. At this point it is just moving to one month highs. Patience should kick in here, but the Read More

$TSX End Of Quarter Review

by Greg Schnell

The $TSX put in another lower low and a lower high this week and closed down relative to last week. The sideways trading range we see in the Canadian market is reminiscent of the period from July to October where the market traded around a level. The level currently shown as a red line is about 15500. On the price panel, this was the first week on the one year chart below that the $TSX never touched or got above the 10 Week MA (blue line). The RSI and MACD are still in a bullish posture on this shorter term chart although the MACD has crossed below its signal line.  Read More
