A cookie is a piece of data stored on the user's computer tied to information about the user. We use both session ID cookies and persistent cookies. For the session ID cookie, once you close your browser, the cookie simply terminates. A persistent cookie is a small text file stored on your hard drive for an extended period of time. Persistent cookies can be removed by following your browser's help file directions.
We use a persistent cookie to ensure that you only see our newsletter popup message once.
We use a session cookie to control access to our membership areas.
If you are a paid member and you have checked the “Remember Me” box when logging in, we store your user ID and password in persistent cookies so that you do not need to re-enter that information each time you visit the site.

Like most web sites, we use web server log files. Clear gif's are tiny graphics with a unique identifier that are used to track the online movements of web users. StockCharts.com uses clear gif's to track general usage trends on our website. Only non-user-specific information (IP address, general geographic location, browser's user agent, etc.) is gathered via clear gif's.
We send all new members a welcoming email to verify their email address and password. Paying members will also receive a reminder email when their account is about to expire. Members who choose our monthly auto-renew feature will also receive an email message if their credit card is about to expire. We also send a final message to expired members just before their account is permanently erased. Users cannot opt-out of this type of messages, though they can deactivate their account.
If a user wishes to subscribe to our newsletter, we ask for their email address. Out of respect for our users' privacy, we provide a way to opt-out of these communications. On rare occasions it is necessary to send out a strictly service related announcement. For instance, if our service is interrupted for a prolonged period we might send all users an email message. Users cannot opt-out of this type of messages, though they can deactivate their account.

StockCharts.com conforms to the PCI compliance guidelines for safe transmission of payment information. We use a third-party service called BrainTree Payments (a division of PayPal) to gather and protect payment information.
